PATS (Passenger Assistance Training SCHEME)

Interior of a small bus with patterned seats and green seat belts.

The scheme provides a nationally recognised standard for the assessment and training of drivers and passenger assistants to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge to provide safe, legal and comfortable journeys to passengers.

PATS (Passenger Assistant Training Scheme) is a specialised training programme designed for individuals who have care or supervision responsibilities for passengers travelling by road. It is widely used across schools, community organisations, transport services, and support settings to ensure that Passenger Assistants have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to keep passengers safe, comfortable, and supported during their journeys.

The training aims to ensure that passenger assistants understand both the legal and safety aspects of transporting  passengers safely, and assist those with disabilities as well as handling emergency situations.
